Photographing the many faces of Oia
Oia is more varied than its familiar sunset silhouette. The archive follows chapels, bell towers, colourful façades and changing relationships with the caldera.
Build depth with architecture
Bell towers and domes can do more than identify Oia. Placed against the caldera, they separate foreground, settlement and distant island into distinct planes.
The archive includes both broad views and close architectural studies, making it possible to assemble a sequence without repeating the same composition.
White is not the only colour
Blue domes are one part of Oia’s palette, but ochre walls, pink surfaces, weathered stone and painted details are equally useful for visual rhythm. Colourful buildings also retain structure when the sky is less dramatic.
The selected photographs deliberately alternate restrained white forms with stronger colour so that a layout can breathe.
Sunset as context, not a formula
Sunset photographs work best in the archive when they remain attached to the village: roofs, churches and caldera edges explain where the light is happening.
